Kelcy Warren Keeps Energy Transfer at Center of Midstream Consolidation

Acquisitions have defined much of Kelcy Warren’s career. The Energy Transfer co-founder has made dealmaking a core part of his company’s identity, and he told Hart Energy in 2023 that he expects that role to continue.

Kelcy Warren sees Energy Transfer acting as an industry consolidator for years to come. The number of desirable targets keeps shrinking, he acknowledged, but some remaining assets would fit the company very well.

The Recent Buying Spree

Over the two years before the 2023 interview, Energy Transfer acquired Enable Midstream, Lotus Midstream and Crestwood Equity Partners. The Crestwood purchase, valued at $7.1 billion, added weight to existing operations in the Permian Basin and Bakken Shale. It also moved the company into the emerging Powder River Basin.

Kelcy Warren described Crestwood’s assets as well matched with Energy Transfer’s network. “They are very compatible,” he said, noting that some planned construction would connect the remaining dots.

Demand from exports helps explain the pace. Rising crude oil and LNG shipments abroad have increased the need for pipeline capacity, and larger, connected systems are better positioned to meet it.

A Pattern Years in the Making

Consolidation is familiar territory for Energy Transfer. Its first major acquisition wave followed Enron’s collapse, when many pipelines unexpectedly came up for sale. A second round began in 2014 with Susser Holdings and continued with Regency Energy Partners, PennTex Midstream Partners, USA Compression Partners and SemGroup.

Between those waves, the company bought Sunoco for $5.3 billion in 2012 and built organic projects, including the Dakota Access Pipeline and new fractionation capacity.

Warren’s outlook extends beyond domestic deals. He wants to expand across North and South America and push further into LNG and petrochemicals.

He views the effort as permanent maintenance on an imperfect machine. “We always try to make our machine more efficient,” Warren said. For Kelcy Warren, a good pipeliner never stops improving the system. Visit this page for additional information.
