Matthew Fleeger’s Leadership Vision Behind Gulf Coast Western
Behind Gulf Coast Western’s growth and reputation is a leadership story that spans decades and crosses multiple industries. Matthew Fleeger, the company’s President, CEO, and Director, did not arrive at his role without preparation. His path included a business degree from Southern Methodist University, hands-on experience with his father’s company and other Texas-based firms, and eventually the founding and sale of a successful business of his own.
From MedSolutions to Oil and Gas
In 1993, Fleeger used his background in business and management to launch MedSolutions Inc., a company focused on medical waste treatment and disposal for health care facilities. The company grew into a leading provider in its space, and in 2007 Fleeger sold it to Stericycle for approximately $59 million. That transaction demonstrated an ability to build value from the ground up and to execute a complex corporate deal on favorable terms.
Fleeger joined Gulf Coast Western as President and CEO in 2009, bringing with him a foundation in acquisitions, general partnerships, strategic planning, and contract negotiation. The timing was not easy the energy industry was still recovering from the financial crisis but Gulf Coast Western stabilized and grew under his direction.
Culture, Attitude, and Philanthropy
Fleeger has spoken openly about his approach to leadership, identifying attitude as his most important quality. He believes that maintaining a positive mindset in the face of adversity is contagious and essential for any leader who wants to bring a team through difficult circumstances.
Beyond the office, Fleeger is known for his philanthropy in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. He supports the Sadie Keller Foundation, which assists families of children with cancer and advocates for increased funding for pediatric cancer research. He also backs Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, an institution with a strong STEM-focused curriculum. These commitments reflect how Gulf Coast Western’s values extend beyond the balance sheet.
